My postgraduate study covered many aspects of equine behaviour therapy, including learning theory, equine ethology, neuropsychology, animal welfare, drug therapy, complementary therapies and human counselling, plus practical training skills.
Whilst I am not restricted to a particular equine training method, my methods are according to the principles of equitation science. This is an emerging field that promotes objective, evidence based training methods through continued research. Using equitation science I can apply methods, such as traditional and clicker training, in a highly effective and humane way. Effective training not only produces desirable behaviours, but also improves the relationship between horse and owner, and has a positive effect on the horse's wellbeing. My goal is to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to achieve this.
My training is always horse-centred, rather than goal-centred, therefore training does not focus on a quick fix or achieving the ultimate goal in the quickest way. Instead, training works within the horse's limits, focusing on the horse's abilities, allowing them to work at a pace that they are comfortable with, therefore encouraging calmness and confidence whilst building a trusting relationship with you.
All my sessions will be appropriate to the needs of you and your horse, depending how and what you want to achieve. Whether you are a first time horse owner, or an experienced horseman, the sessions will be designed to suit.
